July 1 – July 3, 2015

7/1/15 – Out in the stone yard today.
7/1/15 – Photographing stones for an inventory of usable stones.
7/1/15 – Hidden keystone.
7/1/15 – Using our dictionary to look up the difference between a lintel and a jamb. Thanks, Ward!
7/2/15 – The day started off with a photoshoot with our wonderful internship site, the Menokin house, for the presentation.
7/2/15 – Today’s theme is the interns vs. nature: we battled rain, a frog, more rain, a beetle, and a bee. “There’s a bee in the bag! This is not a drill! Abort abort! Not pictured: Sarah and Chris running away while Bethany negotiated with the bee to remove itself from the bag. ”
7/2/15 – We did manage to find a clue among the crazy events that took place during interns vs nature. We discovered that these specific z blocks match some window stones we found in the yard. Nature: 100… Interns: 1. Score!
7/2/15 – Sarah dropped the wire and it got all tangled, but Chris and Bethany fixed it while Sarah pulled up some weeds in the stone yard and apologized profusely.

June 23 – June 30

6/23/15 – The interns have begun their exciting work at Menokin.
6/23/15 – We’ve begun to identify some of the major stones original positions in the main house.
6/30/15 – This annotated drawing of the house shows how the stones are being tagged and numbered. This will allow their return to the proper place in the structure.
6/25/15 – Today was all about water table stones. We were out on site measuring the remains of the East facade. With each new day, we’re making more progress on putting Menokin back together.
6/25/15 – Bethany found a voussoir on one of the pallets today, which is a critical piece of Menokin’s window frames.
6/25/15 – Sarah is helping us update the database today. There is so much information in the jigsaw puzzle we’re trying to put together. But we are finding more of the pieces everyday!
6/29/15 – One of today’s tasks: identifying stones that need repair — this is a quoin from the northwest corner of the building that has broken in half.
6/29/15 – Inside the crack of a broken stone.
6/29/15 – Hard hats: some assembly required. Today, we sets our goals and tasks for the upcoming week. We will be identifying stones that need repair and identifying cut stones and window surrounds. Also today, we ate good Mexican food, had a Walmart adventure, and received our own hard hats!
6/30/15 – Tarp or slip-and-slide?? You decide…
6/30/15 – We found some rhubarb in the stone yard!
6/30/15 – Labeling pallets this morning.

Queen Truss – Alice Talks About Architecture

Menokin’s Education Coordinator, Alice French, has prepared a video lesson about architecture. In this episode she talks about roof framing and the purpose for a queen truss.

Glass House Project team members Ward Bucher and Nakita Reed from Encore Sustainable Design helped Alice with the details of this lesson on their recent working visit to Menokin in February.
